The
Historical Background
of
TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS

This page details the background of Traditional Martial Arts, the Chun Tong system as founded by Dr. Jerry P. Galloway. This includes an account of the more recent influence as well as the ancestral lineage of masters (see photo at bottom) and styles which led directly to the students of Traditional Martial Arts.

Chayon-Ryu Background

This most recent and most direct influence comes from the Chayon-Ryu (tm) style founded by Grandmaster Kim Soo. See our special section on this part of our background by clicking Background on the control panel.  Dr. Galloway studied the Chayon-Ryu style for eleven years and taught the Chayon-Ryu style at Kim Soo Karate, Inc.(tm) and the University of Houston P.E. department working directly with the Grandmaster. He first received his black belt from the Grandmaster in Chayon-Ryu. Dr. J. P. Galloway founded Traditional Martial Arts (Chun Tong) in 1983 in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Galloway is the 3rd generation in Hapkido in a direct line from the founder. Modern developments of TaeKwonDo, after WW-II, from Nam Sok Lee and Chull He Park, passed from Kim Soo to 3rd direct generation, Dr. Galloway. Chinese Kung-Fu (Chuan Fa) brought from Master Byung In Yoon (see chart) adds a unique background to the earlier influences of Japanese Karate to form the eclectic style:  Chun Tong Moo Do
