III. Historical Background         TOP

Early forms of martial arts can be traced to ancient Korea, China, and Okinawa. Dr. Galloway's particular historical background is traced back to the 1700's. This reports - like a family tree - styles, schools and instructors from that time leading to Dr. Galloway.

Part 1.

Iwah and Wai Shin-Zan (Ancient Chinese Kempo - 1700's) taught Sokon Matsumura (Shuri-Te Okinawan Karate - 1790). Matsumura then taughtYasutsune Itosu (Okinawan Karate, 1830-1915).

Liu Liu Ko (Ancient Chinese Kempo - 1790) taughtKanryo Higashionna (Okinawan Karate, 1851-1915).

Itosu and Higashionna and Chosin Chibana (Okinawan Karate, 1887-1969) all three taught Kanken Toyama(Shudokan Karate, 1888-1966). Kanken Toyama then taught Byung In Yoon (Kwonbop - Seoul, Korea, 1945) - who also had learned Chuan Fa (Chinese Kung Fu) in Manchuria.

Part 2.

Byung In Yoon then taught both Nam Sok Lee (Chang Moo Kwan - 1947) and Chull He Park (Kang Duk Won - 1956). Both were instrumental in starting modern TaeKwonDo.

Founder of Hapkido (1946), Yong Shul Choi taught Han Jae Ji (Hapkido - 1961).

Masters Nam Sok Lee, Chull He Park and Han Jae Ji all three taught Grandmaster Kim Soo (Chayon-Ryu, 1968).

Grandmaster Kim Soo taught  Dr. Jerry P. Galloway, 1978 (Chun Tong, 1983). Dr. Galloway is the 2nd generation student after the founders directly from the origin of modern TaeKwonDo and Hapkido. He also has close ties (above) to the origin of Shudokan Karate and Chinese Chuan-Fa.
